Grassroots football shines at Kapstadt CUP 2024

The 13th Kapstadt CUP concluded yesterday after five days of action. The Mother City’s premier grassroots football festival took place at four venues from 2 October 2024.
The 2024 edition of the Kapstadt CUP was a showcase of skills, passion and a display of comradery by 128 teams from 32 clubs.
Collectively, the clubs brought with them 1 780 players in nine age groups from under-7 to under-23.
Among the participants, there were 10 travelling clubs, including Mamelodi Sundowns (Tswhane), Mangaung Metro Football Academy (Bloemfontein), Uptown FC (Upington), Sportcolli (Mbombela), Priory Shamrocks (Port Elizabeth), Warriors FC (Durban), Deutsche Turn Sport Verain, Sport Klub Windhoek (both Namibia), Napoli and River Galaxy (both Gauteng).
For the first time in the tournament’s 14-year history, the Kapstadt CUP featured an U23 competition.
‘The Kapstadt CUP has, for more than a decade, been a wonderful tournament that not only provides these young football stars with a platform to showcase their talent, but also gives them an opportunity to be part of a greater community. It was delightful to see so many youngsters from all over Cape Town, South Africa and Namibia come together for the love of sport. The City of Cape Town’s partnership with the Kapstadt Cup is an affirmation of our commitment to supporting the youth to reach their full potential. Whether it is through funding, support in-kind or providing playing facilities, the City remains committed to contributing to the development of young people, especially through sport,’ said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.
The 2024 Kapstadt CUP took place at Hartleyvale Stadium in Observatory, Green Point Shared Fields, Mutual Park in Pinelands, and St George’s Grammar School in Mowbray.
The champions for the different age groups are as follows:
- U7 – Green Point Salesian Football Club
- U8 – Cape Town Galaxy
- U9 – Bothasig AFC
- U10 – Hout Bay United FC
- U11 – Kapstadt FC
- U12 – Mamelodi Sundowns
- U14 – Mamelodi Sundowns
- U16 – Cape Town Spurs
- U23 – Eagles Performance Academy
